How to clean up the Downloads folder without losing anything important

Downloads is where forgotten files collect. Look at size and age first, keep what matters, and remove the rest in small steps.

Downloads is where files go and stay. You can clean it up without losing anything important if you sort first and delete second: look at size and age, keep what matters, and remove the rest in small steps.

Step 1: see how big it is

In Terminal, this only reads:

du -sh ~/Downloads

To see the biggest items inside it:

du -h -d 1 ~/Downloads | sort -h

The last lines are your biggest files and folders.

Step 2: look at what is old

To list files not changed in the last 90 days, run:

find ~/Downloads -type f -mtime +90

You can change 90 to another number of days. To count them instead of listing them, add | wc -l at the end. Old does not mean unneeded, but it is a good place to start. In Finder you can get a similar view by sorting the folder by Date Modified.

Step 3: sort into three piles

Go through the list and put each item into one of three groups:

  1. Keep. Receipts, tickets, contracts, tax papers and anything you would be sorry to lose. Move them to a proper folder in Documents, not just back into Downloads.
  2. Replaceable. Installers, DMG files, ZIP files and things you can download again. See how to delete DMG files.
  3. Not sure. Leave these for now, or open one to check what it is.

Safe, Risky, Never

  • Safe: installers, disk images and archives you already used, and files you can download again.
  • Risky: documents, receipts, photos and videos you may need. A file that exists only in Downloads has no copy to recover from.
  • Never: deleting everything at once, or deleting a file you did not open or identify.

What breaks if you get it wrong: a missing document or a lost photo, and nothing in the system warns you. Once the Trash is emptied, the file is gone.

Step 4: remove in small steps

Move the replaceable pile to the Trash. Wait a few days, and if nothing is missing, empty the Trash. The space comes back only then. See why moving files to the Trash does not free up space.

Step 5: stop it from refilling

  • Save important downloads straight into a proper folder.
  • Look at Downloads once a month, sorted by size.
  • Check whether your browser asks where to save each file, if you prefer that.

Folders inside Downloads

Some folders in Downloads are projects, extracted archives or things you once copied from a camera. A folder with an unfamiliar name needs the same check: open it and see. The commands above show the size of each folder, so you can start with the largest.

How much to remove

You do not need to clear the folder completely. Aim for a few clear wins: the largest replaceable files first, then very old files you recognise. Stop when you have the room you wanted. A tidy Downloads folder is nice, but the goal is space and peace of mind, not an empty folder.

If the folder is very large, work in rounds. Spend ten minutes on the biggest items, check the free space, and decide whether to continue. Short rounds are easier than one long session, and they reduce the chance that you rush and remove something you wanted. Keep your three piles in mind, and move anything you decide to keep into a proper folder as you go, so the next cleanup starts from a smaller list.

Using a scan

DiskJoy is our product. It scans the folders you allow and lists old downloads with sizes and dates, so you can look at the oldest and biggest first. A scan only reads file sizes and dates and changes nothing. DiskJoy is pre-alpha and cleanup is not available yet, so you remove files yourself. Download DiskJoy for Mac to try a scan.

Next steps

If the biggest files are not in Downloads, find large files on a Mac searches the whole disk. For the full order of steps, read the complete guide to freeing up space on a Mac.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to delete everything in Downloads?

Not always. Downloads often holds files you still need, such as receipts, documents and tickets. Look at what is there and sort it first.

How do I see old files in Downloads on a Mac?

In Terminal, find ~/Downloads -type f -mtime +90 lists files not changed in the last 90 days. In Finder, sort the folder by Date Modified.

Why is my Downloads folder so big?

Browsers and apps save everything there, and nothing removes it. Installers, videos and archives are usually the biggest.
